The review analyzes I.V. Toropitsyn's monograph "The military service of the Astrakhan Yurt Tatars (second half of the 16th – first quarter of the 18th century)" (Kazan, 2025). This comprehensive study examines the history of military service of ethnic military units of the Astrakhan yurt Tatars as part of the Russian army. This service began almost immediately after the Astrakhan Khanate joined the Russian state in the mid-16th century and continued until the first quarter of the 18th century during the pre-imperial period under Peter the Great. In this work, the author identifies the specific features of the use of this contingent by the tsar´s voivodes in campaigns and wars along with other aspects of military affairs.
