The article examines the role of the Temnikov Murzas and Service Tatars in the settlement and development of the Uza and Medveditsa river valleys and their tributaries, flowing through the territory of the modern Saratov, Penza, and Volgograd Oblasts in the context of the history of the Russian frontier in the 17th – 18th centuries, particular attention is paid to the etymology of river names that indicate the development of wild-hive beekeeping in this region in the distant past. Based on the analysis of information from unpublished sources, as well as historical and modern research, the author traces in chronological order the history of the foundation of Tatar settlements in the late 17th – early 19th centuries on the territory of the Uzinsky Stan of the Penza Uyezd. Since 1780, these settlements became part of the Petrovsky Uyezd of the Saratov Namestnichestvo [Viceroyalty] (since 1797 – the Saratov Governorate).
