The article analyzes the activities of the Chuvash department of the Eastern Pedagogical Institute in 1926–1930. The sources of the article were the materials of the Manuscript Fund of Professor N.V. Nikolsky in the Scientific Archive of the Chuvash State Institute of Humanities. There are reports, protocols, reviews, correspondence and other documents that reveal the role of N.I. Nikolsky, N.A. Ashmarin, G.I. Komissarov, V.E. Egorov in the development of higher education in the Chuvash ASSR. The research activity in the Chuvash department was particularly noted.
