Abstract

The article examines the history of the state of Kazan Tatars at the end of the 14th century based on a comparison of information from the “Daftar-i Chingis-name” and Russian chronicles. The author suggests that the first ruler of the Kazan yurt was Altyn-bek, the son of the Bulgar Khan Abdullah, and offers his own version of the etymology of the name “Kazan”. He also puts forward the thesis that before Iske Kazan, the predecessor of modern Kazan was another city – Kashan (Koshan), located on the Kama River.
